Sureños and Norteños are rival gangs that originated in prison and originate from California. The term "Sureños" means Southerners and "Norteños" means Northerners, referring to their respective origins. Sureños mostly have ties to the Mexican Mafia, while Norteños have ties to the Nuestra Familia.
The Sureños are primarily based out of Southern California and have a presence in other parts of the United States as well as Mexico and Central America. They use the color blue, in contrast to the Norteños who use the color red. The Sureños also use the number 13 to signify the 13th letter of the alphabet (M) which represents the Mexican Mafia.
The Norteños are primarily based out of Northern California and have a presence in other parts of the United States as well as Mexico and Central America. They use the color red as a sign of their loyalty to the Nuestra Familia and also use the number 14, representing the 14th letter of the alphabet (N) which represents Nuestra Familia.
Their rivalry has resulted in numerous violent incidents over the years, and law enforcement agencies have been working to combat their activities.
